Once Cup of Jo is up and running smoothly, Cam and I sneak out to Adelyn’s place of work. It’s a little over an hour away, and I drive since I feel the need to keep my mind focused on something other than the case. Driving will work.

“You seem really tense today,” Cam says, placing a hand on my leg.

“Right now, I’m furious with Quentin.”

Cam laughs. “Well, that’s not really anything new.”

I smirk. “No, I guess not. I just wish he’d man up and tell the commissioner he’s reopening the case and tell Samantha that he doesn’t want to be chief of police.”

“Sounds like he dumped a lot of his feelings on you this morning.”

“That’s what ex-girlfriends are for, apparently.” I roll my eyes.

“Not so much. But I hope to never find that out where you’re concerned.”

I feel my cheeks warm. “About what you overheard Mo and me talking about this morning—”

He holds up his hand to stop me. “It’s okay, Jo. Mo can be intense at times. To tell the truth, I was avoiding her, not you or the subject. I actually do think you and I will get married one day. I’ve thought that since I was thirteen.”

“Thirteen?” I look at him briefly before turning my attention back to the road.

“Well, you know as much as a thirteen-year-old boy thinks about marriage.”

“I thought that was not at all.” I laugh.

“Well, we do dream about having gorgeous wives one day.”

“Wives? Really? How many do you plan to have, Mr. Turner?”

“No, I meant boys—as in plural, so I made wives plural, too.”

“Relax. I know what you meant. I’m only teasing you.”

“More like torturing me.”

“I think this is the street the community center is on,” I say, making a righthand turn.

Cam checks the navigation. “Yup. It should be coming up on your left in two hundred feet.”

I pull into the parking lot of the Melville Community Center. The location of the indoor pool is obvious by the dome shaped roof to the right of us. “I think we should go that way.”

“We’re probably supposed to check in at the main entrance, don’t you think?” Cam asks, getting out of the car.

“Yeah, which is why we’re not. We don’t want to leave any sort of paper trail with this case.”

Cam nods. “Does that mean we’re sneaking in the side entrance?”

“You got it. We’ll pretend we ran out to the car to grab something and got locked out.”

We approach the doors and peer inside. A woman wearing a blue one-piece bathing suit and a whistle around her neck is coaching a group of older women in the pool.

“That must be Adelyn,” I say.

“That’s what I’d imagine Adelyn would look like now.”

I knock on the door. Considering there’s a class going on, my excuse of getting locked out of the pool isn’t going to work at all. I’m nowhere near the age group of this particular swim class.

Adelyn says something to the women in the pool and then walks over to the door. She opens it just enough to talk to us.
